US megacorporation Amazon has announced a major expansion of its renewable energy investments in Europe, securing 870 MW of solar PV and wind power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Spain.

The PPAs cover 17 green energy projects in Andalusia, Extremadura, Catalonia, Aragon, and Castile and Leon. This brings the total number of contracted projects in Spain to 94, with a combined capacity of 3.7GW.

Meanwhile, in 2023 Amazon oversaw over 750 MW of solar and wind capacity in Spain. This was more than any other European country.

One of the latest projects is a 212 MW solar PV plant in Salamanca, built by Spanish utility Iberdrola with an investment of nearly €200m. The project is expected to generate over 800 jobs during peak construction.

Iberdrola has also committed to revitalizing the Plaza Amayuelas town square in Ciudad Rodrigo as part of its community engagement.

Beyond Spain, Amazon has added 46 new renewable energy projects across Europe in 2024, including in Italy, Greece, Finland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, and the UK.

These projects contribute to Amazon’s broader portfolio of over 230 solar and wind projects in Europe, which are expected to provide 9GW of new carbon-free energy capacity – enough to power more than 6.7m homes annually.

“Increasing the amount of renewable energy on Europe’s electricity grids is the fastest and cheapest way to help Europe’s economy decarbonise at scale and fight against climate change,” comments Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) at Amazon.

“As Europe’s top corporate investor in renewable energy, we will continue to work with governments, industry, and communities to unlock more of Europe’s renewable energy potential.”
