AMEA Power, a renewable energy firm in the Middle East, announced the official groundbreaking of the Kairouan Solar Photovoltaic Project in Tunisia, boasting a capacity of 120MWp.
The announcement occurred at a ceremony held on May 8th in Dubai and was attended by guests including several government officials and Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power.
The 120MW project, executed by Kairouan Solar Plant, operates under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model with a budget of USD $86m. Funding is provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB).
At the ceremony Al Nowais, said: “By taking advantage of its renewable energy resources, and its strategic location between North Africa and Europe, Tunisia can become a prime location for green energy and trade.
“This groundbreaking project is a beacon for future renewable energy projects in the country, supporting the government’s goal of achieving 35% of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030.”
With commissioning scheduled for Q4 2025, the PV power plant will be AMEA Power’s inaugural operational asset in Tunisia. It is expected to produce 222GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power over 43,000 households and offset 117,000 tonnes of carbon emissions throughout its lifespan – aiding Tunisia in reducing its reliance on oil and gas imports.
In line with its commitment to socio-economic advancement, AMEA Power will engage closely with the local communities of the Kairouan governorate, undertaking various social initiatives through its ‘Community Investment and Development Programs’.
