Brazil’s solar power capacity has reached 52 GW, according to the Brazilian solar association Absolar.

This total includes both large and small-scale installations and represents 21.4% of the country’s grid-connected capacity, making solar the second-largest energy source in Brazil’s grid.

Since 2012, the expansion of solar energy in Brazil has generated over R$238.3bn in investments and created more than 1.5 million local jobs, according to Absolar.

However, the industry faced a challenge in November 2024 when Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC) increased the import tax on solar modules from 9.6% to 25%.

CEO Rodrigo Sauaia explained the need for improved public policies to fully harness the potential of solar energy:

“The country needs to make progress in public policies, such as good legal and regulatory practices, to make better use of solar energy’s potential.”
