Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, met with Guido Clary, the head of the Cairo regional office of the European Investment Bank (EIB), in Al Alamein City to discuss plans to reinforce Egypt’s energy infrastructure – including solar.
Several critical areas were covered, including establishing distribution network control centres, building electrical connections with neighbouring countries, developing a unified grid, and advancing renewable energy initiatives.
Esmat outlined the ministry’s plans to tackle electricity shortages and power outages through the development of distribution networks, improving efficiency, and expanding service offerings.
Solar and renewables
The minister stressed the importance of increasing Egypt’s renewable energy share to diversify its energy sources.
Egypt currently has projects under construction, which aim to raise its renewable energy capacity to 45,000MW. Existing capacities include 4.6GW from wind and solar energy and 2,832MW from hydroelectric power.
Esmat noted Egypt’s commitment to leveraging its natural resources and advancing projects like the green energy corridor, which is designed to enhance electrical connectivity with Europe and support African nations.
Guido Clary commended Egypt’s expertise in the electricity and renewable energy sectors, expressing the EIB’s keen interest in expanding cooperation, particularly in boosting solar and wind energy projects.
Clary emphasised the importance of collaborating with international financial institutions to support climate-resilient projects and advance the green economy.
