The Energy Storage Coalition has urged the European Commission to implement an Action Plan on Energy Storage to support the EU’s energy transition goals.
As the European Union begins a new five-year term, it faces key challenges in maintaining global competitiveness, securing its energy supply, and meeting climate targets.
The Coalition calls for regulatory clarity, streamlined deployment processes, and increased investment in energy storage across Member States.
“The success of the energy transition depends on energy storage and renewables working together,” said Doriana Forleo, Executive Director of the Energy Storage Coalition.
“The reform of the Electricity Market Design is a great step forward, but we need clear regulatory guidance and targeted incentives to unlock the full potential of energy storage across the EU.”
Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, highlighted the need for storage to support solar energy integration, stating, “Our Mission Solar 2040 study estimates that 1.2TWh of storage will be required to meet solar energy targets and save the system €160bn by 2040. However, we need an EU Energy Storage Action Plan to achieve this!”
Patrick Clerens, Secretary General of The European Association for Storage of Energy, emphasised the Action Plan’s importance for Europe’s competitiveness and energy security.
“The Action Plan is about pushing renewables and storage forward, attracting investments and ensuring Europe’s energy security,” he said.
The Energy Storage Coalition outlined five key elements for the Action Plan, including
- Dedicated incentives for storage
- Harmonised rules for storage deployment
- Fair network charges
- Prioritisation in capacity markets, launching auctions and flexibility solutions
- Monitoring storage growth in National Energy and Climate Plans
The Coalition includes SolarPower Europe, The European Association for Storage of Energy, WindEurope, and Breakthrough Energy.
