Engie SA, together with a consortium of EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO), is competing against a partnership of Jinko Power and Jera to develop the 1.5 GW Khazna solar PV project in Abu Dhabi’s Al Khazna area.

This project is a significant renewable energy initiative aimed at enhancing solar capacity in the region.

On Wednesday, the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) confirmed that the French energy company and its competitors submitted their proposals.

Following an initial Expression of Interest (EOI) phase, EWEC shortlisted 19 bidders who were then invited to submit proposals.

The three proposals will undergo an in-depth technical and commercial evaluation, with the winning bidder expected to be announced by the second quarter of 2025.

The selected company will sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with EWEC, which serves as Abu Dhabi’s sole buyer of power and water capacity.

The Khazna solar PV project will be EWEC’s fourth large-scale solar venture, aiming to produce sufficient electricity to supply approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE. Upon completion, the project is set to bring EWEC’s total solar PV capacity to around 5.5 GW.

EWEC has set ambitious goals to expand Abu Dhabi’s solar generation capacity to 13 GW by 2030, with the target of meeting 60% of the emirate’s power demand through renewable and clean energy by 2035.

Earlier this year, EWEC awarded the 1.5-GW Al Ajban solar PV project to an international consortium, including EDF Renewables, KOWEPO, and UAE-based Masdar.
