Grenergy Renovables has partnered strategically with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. (CATL) to supply batteries for the fourth phase of the 2GW/11GWh Oasis de Atacama solar and storage project in Chile.
Construction is set to begin soon, and CATL will provide 1.25GWh of its EnerX model containers – featuring over 7,100 modules.
These containers are distinguished by their high energy storage density and are optimized for the project’s high-altitude location at 4,000 meters, enabling efficient energy capture within a compact space.
The EnerX containers employ LFP (lithium iron phosphate) technology, valued for its reliability and safety.
Oasis de Atacama, located in northern Chile, boasts an energy storage capacity of 11GWh and a solar generation capacity of 2GW. With an investment totalling $2.3bn, the project is expected to generate 5.5TWh of renewable energy annually.
Grenergy has already secured energy purchase agreements for the first four phases, with discussions for additional phases underway.
“The collaboration with CATL is a fundamental milestone to consolidate Oasis de Atacama,” said David Ruiz de Andrés, executive chairman of Grenergy.
“We are excited to have signed this first contract and to be working with the world’s leading battery manufacturers on a project that will make industry history.”
Tan Libin, chief customer officer and president of CATL’s ESS division, remarked, “CATL remains steadfast in its commitment to accelerating a sustainable energy future worldwide.
By collaborating with Grenergy on this pivotal project in the Chilean Atacama Desert, a region renowned for its abundant solar resources, we’re excited to empower the Chilean people with consistent and reliable access to clean electricity through our state-of-the-art energy storage solutions.”
