UK-based Lightsource bp has announced the completion of the 187 MW Peacock Solar project in San Patricio County, Texas.
The solar farm will supply power to Gulf Coast Growth Ventures (GCGV), a nearby manufacturing complex producing materials for everyday products like food containers, clothing, and construction materials.
“Peacock Solar adds to Lightsource bp’s operational fleet in Texas, helping reduce carbon emissions while diversifying the state’s energy mix to enhance security and reliability,” said Helen Brauner, Interim Chief Operating Officer at Lightsource bp USA.
Developed, built, and operated by Lightsource bp, the project is expected to generate over 360,000 MWh of electricity annually while creating economic and environmental benefits.
During construction, Peacock Solar created over 300 on-site jobs and is projected to generate more than $25m in tax revenue over the next 25 years.
“By layering on biodiversity and agrivoltaics initiatives, projects like Peacock offer a win-win for both the environment and local communities,” Brauner added.
These initiatives include planting native vegetation to support pollinators and wildlife, improving soil health, and using sheep grazing to sustain local agriculture.
The project also highlights Lightsource bp’s commitment to U.S. manufacturing, utilising ultra-low carbon solar panels from Arizona-based First Solar and trackers from Connecticut-based GameChange Solar.
“This project exemplifies our dedication to being a responsible site and an environmental steward,” said Paul Fritsch, president and site manager at GCGV.
“By implementing innovative energy solutions, we ensure our site efficiently produces the essential products society relies on.”
