The government of the Switzerland canton Graubünden has approved Swiss power producer Axpo’s alpine solar project in the village of Disentis/Mustér.

The 9 MW plant, named “Ovra Solara Magriel”, is expected to generate 14.6 GWh of electricity annually, with approximately 5.4 GWh produced during winter.

Located at around 2,100 meters above sea level in the Disentis ski area, the project will cover 13.5 ha and feature 20,570 solar modules.

Residents of Disentis/Mustér voted in favour of the project on October 22, 2023. Axpo then indicated that, pending approval, construction could begin in spring 2025, with partial commissioning in autumn 2025 and full operation by autumn 2027.

However, the company has now revised that timeline – with next steps to be announced after Axpo has reviewed the approval documentation.

A separate alpine solar project, “Nalp Solar” in Tujetsch, Graubünden, received its building permit in May 2024. Covering 10 ha, it is expected to generate nearly 11 GWh annually.

The project remains in the procurement phase, with construction planned for spring 2025. However, the final investment decision is pending.

Axpo has also cancelled several other Alpine solar projects, including Glarus Süd Solar, Alpin Solar Ybrig in Oberiberg, and Ovra Solara Camplauns and Ovra Solara Rueun in Ilanz/Glion.

The Glarus Süd project was halted due to natural hazards, environmental concerns, and low energy yield. Projects in Oberiberg and Ilanz/Glion were rejected by municipal voters.
