QatarEnergy, a state-owned petroleum company, has announced plans to build a 2GW solar power plant, a move that will significantly boost Qatar’s solar energy production and support the nation in achieving its 2030 renewable energy targets.

The new solar park will be in the Dukhan area, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Doha, QatarEnergy stated on Sunday.

This project will bring QatarEnergy’s total solar capacity in the country to nearly 4 GW by 2030, representing roughly 30% of Qatar’s overall electricity generation capacity.

2022 saw QatarEnergy switch on Qatar’s first large-scale solar facility, the 800MWp Al Kharsaah site, which generates enough electricity to cover 10% of the country’s peak power demand.

The company is also working on two additional solar projects in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed industrial cities, with a combined capacity of 875 MW. Both sites are expected to start operations by the end of this year.

In April, Qatar introduced its renewable energy strategy, aiming to raise the share of renewables to 4 GW by 2030.
