QatarEnergy has partnered with TotalEnergies to invest in a solar power project as part of Iraq’s Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP).

Under this agreement, pending regulatory approvals, QatarEnergy will hold a 50% stake in the solar photovoltaic initiative, with TotalEnergies retaining the remaining 50%.

This large-scale solar project, among the biggest globally, will feature two million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels on single-axis trackers.

When fully operational, the facility is expected to deliver up to 1.25 gigawatts (peak) of solar energy to the Basra region’s power grid, supplying electricity to approximately 350,000 homes.

The project will be developed in phases, with completion projected between 2025 and 2027.

Expressing his views on the partnership, His Excellency Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said:

“I am pleased to have concluded our entry into this very important project for Iraq’s energy sector, and look forward to working with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to progress it to fruition.

“We thank the Iraqi government for their trust, and TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power development.”

In June 2023, QatarEnergy announced its entry into a consortium to develop the Gas Growth Integrated Project in Iraq, taking a 25% stake alongside TotalEnergies (45%) and Basra Oil Company (30%).

The GGIP is a critical strategic initiative that includes designing and constructing facilities to utilise Iraq’s natural resources and capturing significant amounts of flared gas across the Basra region to supply electricity generation plants.
