The UK’s drive to meet its ambitious 2030 clean energy goals has taken a major step forward with the approval of the country’s largest solar farm.

The 600MW Cottam Solar Project, located on the Lincolnshire-Nottinghamshire border, has been granted development consent by the Planning Inspectorate.

This project, which includes battery storage, will generate enough electricity to power 180,000 homes annually and is expected to save 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.

Developer Island Green Power plans to connect the solar farm to the grid using the infrastructure previously used by the Cottam coal-fired power station, replacing nearly a third of its former capacity.

The closure of the UK’s last remaining coal-fired power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, is expected by the end of the month.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband emphasised the importance of solar in the country’s energy transition:

“This government is determined to give families and businesses energy security by getting off the rollercoaster of unstable international gas markets that led to increased bills. The only way to do this is to back cheap, homegrown energy.”

Expanding solar

The Cottam Solar Project is part of a broader government effort to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy. In its latest renewables auction, the government secured 9.6GW of new clean power across 131 projects.

Solar Energy UK’s Stephen Wilding called the approval “another step in the right direction towards a sustainably-powered solar nation” and highlighted the government’s commitment to achieving 50GW solar capacity by 2030.

The project will also significantly enhance local biodiversity, creating permanent grassland, hedgerows, and ecological buffer zones.

These enhancements are expected to deliver a biodiversity net gain of 77% for habitat units and 56% for hedgerow units. Island Green Power’s Eve Browning stated the company would focus on delivering community and environmental benefits, such as new walking routes and direct funding for local projects.

The Cottam Solar Project is the seventh large-scale solar farm to receive consent, bringing the combined capacity of these projects to nearly 2.9GW. Several additional solar farms are in the pre-application stage, positioning the UK for further growth in its renewable energy capacity.
