The inaugural First Nations Clean Energy Strategy has been revealed by the Australian Government, marking both renewables and cultural milestones for the country.
In a release from the Australian Government, the Strategy has been described as a framework for a national energy framework.
With extensive insight from Australia’s First Nation people, the Strategy will cover governments, industries, and communities.
Foundations
Six “foundational principles” have been outlined in the Strategy, all designed to keep First Nations peoples front and centre of Australia’s clean energy drive.
These principles are verbatim:
- First Nations peoples maintain their right to live on their land, with access to reliable and affordable clean energy
- First Nations peoples’ cultural heritage must be recognised, protected and celebrated throughout the clean energy transition
Goals
When building the Strategy, keeping “Country and Culture at the Heart” unpinned its clean energy transformation. Three goals have been outlined to achieve this aim:
- Utilising clean energy to empower First Nations communities
- Seeking and obtaining economic benefits with First Nations communities
- Through equitable partnerships: the curation of 11 objectives and 24 priority areas – which will support the clean energy drive’s goals and vision
By including First Nations peoples across Australia and platforming their voices and expertise, the country has invested in both environmental and cultural sustainability for its future.
