Empowering consumers with Flexible Technology
Cornwall Insights, in collaboration with Smart Energy GB, have concluded that consumer use of Solar power and energy storage technology could save consumers money on their energy bills and remove the need for £1billion worth of fossil fuel infrastructure upgrades.
The renewable energy consultancy’s research found that domestic flexibility electricity technology (like Solar PV panels and battery storage), time-of-use tariffs, and the introduction of smart metres could remove the need for four new gas fired power stations.
The study presented that cost savings would apply nationally in addition to the individual customer.
Providing the consumer with sufficient education and encouraging them to install smart meters will allow them to access time-of-use tariffs and participate in successful energy saving schemes. The National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Scheme cut 3.3GwH of peak electricity use that allowed customers to save money on their bills. 83% of participants said they would participate in the scheme again.
Time-of-use tariffs allowed customers to adapt their energy use according to demand. Such initiatives could cut wholesale electricity costs by 52% by 2040, equating to a £375 saving for the average household.
Ultimately, empowering customers in saving their energy bills are key to supporting home decarbonisation.
Engagement in domestic flexibility will help reach nationwide net zero targets and help consumers save money on their electricity bills. Smart metering is crucial to this, providing important data that allow the consumers to optimise their energy use.
