European Energy has inaugurated its first operational solar project in Australia, completing it ahead of schedule.
The 58MW Mokoan Solar Park in Winton, Victoria, is the first step in the company’s 9GW development pipeline. The site is undergoing final performance testing, with full commercial operations expected by June 2025.
European Energy’s chief executive, Knud Erik Andersen, and Benalla Rural City Council Mayor, Bernie Hearn, visited the site during commissioning. The solar farm, located in northern Victoria’s Hume region, will supply renewable electricity to over 18,000 households.
Construction was completed under budget, less than a year after European Energy’s financial investment decision. Managing director of European Energy Australia, Catriona McLeod, said:
“Australia is a promising market for renewable energy, and the commissioning of our first solar farm here is a proud moment for our entire team.
“Mokoan Solar Park will help deliver energy security for Victoria while cutting carbon emissions by more than 85,000 tonnes each year.”
European Energy reports an economic impact of over AUD $95 million invested in local suppliers, 150 jobs created during construction, and eight ongoing operational roles.
The company is also investing AUD $400,000 in community initiatives supporting local organisations, the Yorta Yorta people, and regional businesses.
“Bringing our first solar project online in Australia is a significant achievement for European Energy and a strong signal of our long-term commitment to the country,” said Andersen.
The project supports renewable energy investment and is part of the Australian government’s Capacity Investment Scheme.
European Energy has signed an MoU with conservation charity Odonata to enhance biodiversity and is working towards an agreement with the Yorta Yorta Nations Aboriginal Corporation to support First Nations communities.
