Every year on March 18, Global Recycling Day serves as a global call to action, highlighting the importance of waste management, resource recovery, and sustainable consumption.

In 2025, the focus is increasingly shifting to solar panel recycling, as the world looks for solutions to manage the growing wave of discarded photovoltaic (PV) panels.

Solar panel recycling

While solar panels are designed to last 25-40 years, many installed in the early 2000s are now reaching the end of their lifespan. The growing concern is how to dispose of them sustainably without contributing to electronic waste​.

The solar panel recycling process consists of several key steps:

  1. Disassembly – The aluminium frame and junction box are removed, as these parts are easily recyclable​.
  2. Glass Separation – The glass layer, which makes up most of the panel, is extracted and repurposed for new glass products.
  3. Silicon Recovery – The silicon cells are heated to 500°C (pyrolysis) to remove the encapsulated plastic, leaving behind reusable silicon wafers​.
  4. Metal Extraction – Silver, copper, and other metals are recovered using chemical and mechanical separation methods.

Given that solar panel waste is expected to increase by over 4,000% in the next decade, it is critical to establish efficient recycling systems.

European startup ROSI (Return of Silicon) has developed an innovative method to recover and recondition high-purity silicon, along with other valuable materials, making them available for reuse in new solar panels and electronic devices.

How can we improve?

Despite advancements in solar panel recycling, several challenges remain:

  • High costs and complexity – The laminated structure of solar panels makes it difficult to separate materials efficiently.
  • Limited recycling infrastructure – Many countries lack dedicated solar recycling plants, leading to improper disposal.
  • Low Public Awareness – Many homeowners and businesses are unaware that solar panels can be recycled or how to do it.
Specialised recycling facilities

More investment in dedicated recycling plants can make the process more efficient and cost-effective.

Stronger manufacturer responsibility

Policies like the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive require manufacturers to take back old panels for free recycling, an approach that should be adopted globally.

Redesign for easier recycling  

Future solar panels could be built with modular designs, making them simpler to disassemble and recycle.

Industry collaboration and policy support

Organisations like EMR and Solar Energy UK are working together to improve recycling infrastructure and establish a circular economy for solar panels.

Onwards and upwards

As the world continues its transition to renewable energy, solar panel recycling will become a critical industry. By 2050, over 1m solar panels will need decommissioning annually in the UK alone, creating a massive demand for recycling solutions.

Industry leaders are already stepping up to tackle this challenge. Companies like ROSI are pioneering recycling technologies that recover high-value materials, reducing waste and making solar energy even more sustainable.

By 2030, advancements in technology, stronger regulations, and improved public awareness will ensure that solar panels remain an environmentally friendly solution from production to disposal.
