UK energy supplier Octopus Energy has introduced a new trial program that allows solar customers to donate the value of their excess energy to assist individuals facing fuel poverty.
Named Octopus Solar Sharing, this “world-first” initiative enables households generating surplus solar energy to donate its value to either the National Energy Action (NEA) charity or Octopus’s Octo Assist fund, which provides aid to customers in financial need.
Many households with solar installations generate more electricity than they can use.
Typically, energy providers allow these customers to sell their extra energy to the grid. However, Octopus Solar Sharing offers a new option for these households to support charitable causes instead of profiting from their surplus energy.
For each kilowatt-hour donated, Octopus will contribute an additional 15p directly to the selected charity.
The program initially includes NEA and Octo Assist, with plans to expand to additional charities.
