Royal Mail is adding over 2,000 electric light commercial vehicles (eLCVs) to its fleet, aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2040.

This includes 1,100 E-Partners manufactured at the UK’s first EV-only plant in Ellesmere Port, which will feature King Charles III’s cypher.

Additionally, Peugeot will supply 1,000 fully electric E-Expert vans, with more than half deployed by the Christmas season to boost eco-friendly deliveries during peak demand.

As of July 2024, Royal Mail operates the UK’s largest EV fleet, totalling about 5,000 electric vans. The new Peugeot additions are projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes per year when fully integrated.

This fleet expansion aligns with Royal Mail’s plan to replace mail trains by October 2024, halve air freight, and cut emissions.

Other initiatives

Beyond EVs, Royal Mail uses hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for its heavy goods vehicles, achieving over 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ savings since June 2023.

The new E-Partners boast a range of up to 213 miles (WLTP), maintain up to 4.4m³ of load volume, and offer a payload capacity of 780kg. They will be charged onsite using Royal Mail’s renewable electricity.

Greg Sage, Royal Mail’s deputy director for ESG, stated, “We’re proud that our latest tranche of electric vehicles has been produced at Peugeot’s Ellesmere Port plant

“This is an important part of our work to expand the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and to remain the UK’s greenest delivery company.”

Eurig Druce, Stellantis UK managing director, added, “Peugeot’s electric vans are built in Britain for an iconic British brand, supporting Royal Mail’s electrification ambitions.”
