Survey: UK drivers growing interest in EVs despite myths

A new study by EV Charger Installation highlights growing enthusiasm among UK drivers for electric vehicles (EVs), especially among younger generations, though misconceptions still affect broader adoption.

The survey of over 2,500 UK motorists found that 88% hold outdated views on EV performance, charging access, and environmental impact.

Many drivers still see charging infrastructure as limited, with 73% believing there aren’t enough stations, despite a 45% rise in public charging points since January 2023.

EV performance for long trips also remains a concern for 47% of respondents, although the latest EV models now average a range of 300 miles—well above typical weekly UK driving distances.

While cost is another factor, with two-thirds perceiving EVs as expensive, reduced long-term running costs are expected to offset initial prices.

The survey reveals a positive shift among younger drivers. About 62% of millennials (ages 25-39) plan to purchase an EV within the next five years, driven by eco-consciousness and lower fuel expenses.

Notably, 76% of respondents under 30 are “highly concerned” about the environmental impact of petrol and diesel vehicles. In contrast, only 14% of drivers over 60 show similar interest in EVs, citing battery life and charging ease as concerns.

Tackling myths

The study also challenges common myths about EVs. The UK now has over 30,000 public charging points, and battery recycling facilities are widely available to safely handle lithium-ion disposal.

Research further shows that a full transition to EVs would only increase grid demand by around 10%, within current capacity.

The study found that 80% of drivers would consider an EV if more affordable used models were available, suggesting that interest will grow as the market expands.

“Education is key,” said Founder Marc Dal Cin. “The future is bright for EVs, but we must continue to tackle misconceptions to support a transition that benefits both people and the planet.”

UK’s Royal Mail adds over 2,000 EVs in net-zero push

UK’s Royal Mail adds over 2,000 EVs in net-zero push

Royal Mail is adding over 2,000 electric light commercial vehicles (eLCVs) to its fleet, aiming to reach net-zero emissions by 2040.

This includes 1,100 E-Partners manufactured at the UK’s first EV-only plant in Ellesmere Port, which will feature King Charles III’s cypher.

Additionally, Peugeot will supply 1,000 fully electric E-Expert vans, with more than half deployed by the Christmas season to boost eco-friendly deliveries during peak demand.

As of July 2024, Royal Mail operates the UK’s largest EV fleet, totalling about 5,000 electric vans. The new Peugeot additions are projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes per year when fully integrated.

This fleet expansion aligns with Royal Mail’s plan to replace mail trains by October 2024, halve air freight, and cut emissions.

Other initiatives

Beyond EVs, Royal Mail uses hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) for its heavy goods vehicles, achieving over 30,000 tonnes of CO₂ savings since June 2023.

The new E-Partners boast a range of up to 213 miles (WLTP), maintain up to 4.4m³ of load volume, and offer a payload capacity of 780kg. They will be charged onsite using Royal Mail’s renewable electricity.

Greg Sage, Royal Mail’s deputy director for ESG, stated, “We’re proud that our latest tranche of electric vehicles has been produced at Peugeot’s Ellesmere Port plant

“This is an important part of our work to expand the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and to remain the UK’s greenest delivery company.”

Eurig Druce, Stellantis UK managing director, added, “Peugeot’s electric vans are built in Britain for an iconic British brand, supporting Royal Mail’s electrification ambitions.”
