In the lead-up to Solar & Storage Live España 2025, Solar&StorageXtra spoke to RatedPower’s Territory Manager for Iberia – Alicia Herrera.

Alicia talked about Europe’s fluctuating solar and storage market, how the company is adapting to the flow, and why Spain is an excellent solar PV case study.

“The country’s push toward hybridisation and storage integration demonstrates how to build resilience into renewable portfolios.”

Can you talk about RatedPower’s role and mission in the PV and storage industry?

RatedPower is a software company at the forefront of digitalising the solar industry. Its mission is to accelerate the global transition to clean energy by simplifying and optimising the design and engineering of utility-scale solar and storage projects.

Through its cloud-based platform, RatedPower enables developers, EPCs, and investors to streamline feasibility studies, reduce design time, and increase project efficiency.

By automating complex engineering tasks, RatedPower empowers stakeholders to bring projects to market faster and with greater confidence.

As the international solar market changes and new technology emerges, how are RatedPower adapting to meet expectations?

RatedPower remains agile by continuously innovating based on industry trends and client feedback.

As hybrid systems and storage integration gain prominence, RatedPower has expanded its platform’s capabilities to support energy storage modelling, multi-technology projects, and more granular yield assessments.

The platform is regularly updated to incorporate the latest technologies, such as bifacial modules, trackers, and advanced grid requirements, ensuring users are always aligned with market expectations.

RatedPower also invests in research and collaborates with global partners to stay ahead of policy and regulatory shifts.

What challenges is the European solar market facing, and how do you think they should be tackled?

Europe’s solar market faces several challenges, including permitting delays, grid congestion, land availability, and supply chain pressures.

Additionally, regulatory fragmentation across countries complicates cross-border development. To tackle these, there’s a need for policy harmonisation, digitised permitting processes, and better infrastructure investment.

Battery storage systems are also playing a crucial role by easing grid congestion, enabling load shifting, and increasing the flexibility of renewable integration.

Tools like RatedPower’s software help address inefficiencies in early-stage development by enabling quicker site assessments and design iterations.

The platform also supports standalone battery systems and both AC- and DC-coupled configurations, giving developers greater flexibility to adapt projects to regulatory and grid constraints.

As a company with global reach based in Madrid, how does Spain’s solar and storage market differ from others in Europe?

Spain benefits from exceptional solar irradiance and a steadily improving regulatory framework, which has positioned it as a key player in Europe’s solar resurgence. However, the market is currently facing significant bottlenecks.

Permitting delays, limited grid capacity, and regulatory uncertainty are slowing project deployment and creating challenges for developers.

In this context, battery storage offers a promising path forward, helping relieve grid congestion and opening new business models that can improve project viability.

Compared to countries like Portugal and the Netherlands, where clearer permitting processes and more agile grid planning have accelerated development, Spain still faces structural issues that must be addressed.

Markets like Italy and Greece face similar challenges, particularly around grid access, but are making progress through reforms such as digital permitting and improved project planning. RatedPower is at the forefront of this shift, helping developers design both solar and standalone storage projects more efficiently, even in complex grid and regulatory environments.

This allows companies to assess project viability and adapt to rapidly changing conditions, which is critical in both mature and emerging markets across Europe.

As the Solar & Storage Live event series expands into Spain, how can the industry learn from the country’s solar achievements and innovations?

Spain offers valuable lessons in scaling solar through market-based mechanisms, grid modernisation, and fostering a competitive PPA environment.

The country’s push toward hybridisation and storage integration demonstrates how to build resilience into renewable portfolios.

Events like Solar & Storage Live Spain provide a platform to share these experiences, spotlight cutting-edge projects, and encourage collaboration across borders.

By analysing Spain’s progress and setbacks, the industry can refine its strategies for accelerating clean energy adoption across diverse markets.
