As Spain cements its place as a European solar powerhouse, there’s no better time to get involved.

Ahead of Solar & Storage Live España in Valencia on June 25–26, 2025, we explore the key findings from our latest Spain Solar Market Report – highlighting the trends, targets, and challenges shaping Spain’s solar future.

A renewable milestone

Spain’s solar sector has rapidly evolved into one of Europe’s most dynamic clean energy markets. By early 2023, the country had reached a total solar generation capacity of 22.45GW.

A landmark moment arrived in May 2023, when Spain powered its entire grid using renewable energy for nine consecutive hours – a powerful demonstration of solar’s growing reliability and centrality to the national energy mix.

Surging capacity and rising storage

Ground-mounted solar farms account for 77% of new installations, underscoring the dominance of utility-scale projects.

Key players such as Iberdrola, Acciona, and Enel Green Power are leading development efforts, particularly in regions like Extremadura and Andalusia.

Solar contributed 17.5TWh of electricity in 2023, and its share of the national mix has grown from 6.9% in 2020 to 13.6% in 2023.

In late 2024, 820 MW of new storage projects were announced, with 182 MW set to hybridise existing solar and wind facilities.

The government has raised its 2030 storage target from 20GW to 22.5GW, demonstrating its commitment to ensuring energy system flexibility and stability.

Government policy and investment

The Spanish government has played a pivotal role in driving growth. Its updated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) sets ambitious goals: 76GW of solar and 22.5GW of energy storage by 2030.

This plan is backed by €236bn in investments across renewable energy, grid infrastructure, and energy efficiency between 2021 and 2030.

To streamline development, the government has introduced incentives for self-consumption and simplified permitting for new technologies such as floating PV.

Policy changes also prioritise grid access for renewable projects and address long-standing bottlenecks in grid congestion.

Future outlook and challenges

Spain is expected to surpass 50GW of solar capacity by 2026 and exceed 120GW by 2030. The market’s compound annual growth rate (CAGR) is projected at 15.96%, driven by falling technology costs, robust policies, and investor confidence.

However, significant challenges remain. Grid congestion and delays in permitting continue to slow progress.

Price cannibalisation – where increased solar supply reduces market prices – threatens the profitability of new projects. Regional disparities in adoption and inconsistent policy application also pose hurdles.

A global solar leader

Despite these challenges, Spain remains firmly on track to meet its energy transition targets.

With renewables expected to supply 80% of electricity by 2030, and substantial improvements planned in energy efficiency, Spain is positioning itself as a global leader in solar power.
